Round six of the Cornwall Multi-terrain Race Series brought almost 300 runners to St Austell for the tough Imerys Trail Half Marathon. Over a hundred more decided that ‘only’ 13 miles in the lunar landscape of the China Clay pits wasn’t nearly enough, and doubled the distance to the full trail marathon. Both courses are tough in any conditions, and some runners understandably took the option of switching from marathon to half mid-race. The trail conditions meant it was an opportunity for Mud Crew to shine, which they did, particularly in the ladies races.
In the half marathon, it was Mud Crew’s Sarah Morwood who took the ladies race in 1:34:29. With less than two weeks to go until she represents Great Britain at the IAU World Trail Championships, she showed her training is clearly going well! Close behind were Joanna Herd (Newquay Road Runners) and Sarah James (unaffiliated).
Mud Crew stalwart and Truro RC runner Isobel Wykes took third place in the marathon and astonishingly nine Mud Crew runners appeared in the top 13 places, picking up many of the age category prizes and both first and second team places. The achievement is all the more remarkable given the relative size of the club. The ladies marathon was won overall by Lucy Hodgson (Newquay & Par AC), closely followed by Zelah Morrall (Cornwall AC), both of whom finished in the top ten overall.
In the men’s marathon, Adrian Ball (Cornwall AC) beat his club-mate Noel Kindon’s winning time of last year, but couldn’t quite crack three hours, finishing in 3:00:16. Adam Holland (Notfast) was second, with host club St Austell RC’s Stuart Nicholas in third. Again Mud Crew did well, despite having a small team, taking second prize behind host club St Austell.
In the men’s half marathon, it was Peter Waumsley (Tamar Trotters) who scooped the maximum points, winning in 1:24:09. With visiting runners Jordan Andrews and Charlie Baker taking the next two places on the podium, series points went further down the results with Dave Angell of Mile High and Paul Sawford of Carn Runners particularly benefiting. We’ll bring you the latest MTRS tables when we have them!
