GP – With two races left, 21 runners with everything to play for!
With only two races remaining in the Cornwall Glass and Glazing Grand Prix, a few things are already certain: Cornwall AC have won both both team prizes, helped by overall open winners Justin Thomas and Emma Stepto. However, things are remarkably tight in other parts of the GP tables, and several runners really do have everything to play for. The two remaining races could hardly be more different: while several runners can be relied on to turn up and run to form at the Newquay 10k, everything can change at the final race of the season, the Cornish Marathon!
As mentioned in the Truro Marathon round-up, the battle for second place in the Male Overall Open could hardly be closer, with Paul Whear (Carn Runners) only two points clear of Jordan Morant (Hayle). Jordan is the clear leader in the Male Under 35 category, but only two points separate club-mate Daniel Costello and Aaran Benney (Mile High). In the Male 35-59 category, the race is closer still, with Ceri Whitmore (CAC) only one point behind club-mate Paul Smith, and fourth place Marc Bayly (Newquay) only two points behind Craig Hall (Carn Runners). In the 40-44 category there are unlikely to be any surprises, but the podium is far from settled in the 45-49 group. Behind the clear winner Paul Whear, Steve Wherry (CAC) leads Adrian Ball (also CAC) by just two points. Similarly, Mark Dorrell (Carn Runners) is second behind Nick Martin (Mile High) in the 50-54 category, only two points ahead of Robin Watson (Falmouth Road Runners).
We’ve already mentioned that Cornwall AC will take the Male Team title, ahead of Hayle Runners. However, third place could go to either Mile High or Newquay Road Runners, who are both tied on 788 points!
In the Ladies Open, the race for second place is even closer than in the Male Open, with Eleanor Davis (Newquay) just one point ahead of Emma Schuck (Hayle). By a quirk of mathematics, the situation is reversed in the Female Under 35 category, where Emma holds a single point lead over Eleanor! Where the two have raced each other Emma has finished ahead of Eleanor three times (Trevornick Trot, Turkey Trot, Indian Queens Half), with Eleanor finishing ahead of Emma at the St Levan 10k and last weekend’s Truro Half. Will Eleanor’s late season form hold to take the Under 35 title?
In Emma Stepto’s age category, Anne Waller (Mounts Bay) will be chased all the way for second by Charlotte Bennett (Hayle), who sits just three points behind her. It’s closer still in the Female 55-59 category, with Diane Warren (Hayle Runners) currently tied in first place with Wendy Lowe (Bodmin Womens Running Club)! There is still everything to play for in the 65-69 category with Cheryll Leach (Launceston Road Runners) only one point ahead of Carole Drew (Carn Runners), behind group leader Mary Mullarkey (East Cornwall Harriers).
As with the men, Cornwall AC will take the Female Team title, but only one point separates Hayle Runners in second and Newquay Road Runners in third.
So there’s definitely plenty of action still to come in the GP, with just a fortnight before the Newquay 10k! For an entry form, and other race info, just click here.
